The best known archive format is certainly ZIP, the most important competitors and alternatives are RAR (pretty much only WinRAR creates such archives, competitor tools mostly only unpack RAR) and 7z (proprietary 7-Zip format). An algorithm causes a reorganization of the data structure: depending on how well a content can be compressed (and depending on the level of the algorithm, whether you can select it in your archive program), the space savings are more or less high.
